Fly Tying Organization

A desktop tool for storing and organizing your fly tying tools and materials.

Buffalo Fly Co. is a fishing guide service around the Buffalo, NY area as well as a supplier of hand tied flies, check it out here!

The client was looking for a an at-home product for organizing materials as well as tools during the fly tying process. Much of the initial inspiration came from a “Lazy Susan” style design where the product is round, but swivels on a base so that the entire circumference can be usable space.

If you look out your window to the right, you can see a few layout concepts for different basins, holes and spool locations to maximize each material that will sit on the product.

The organizational tool is designed to hold:

  • Various sizes of hooks

  • Various sizes of weighted bead heads

  • Spools of thread

  • Finished flies

  • Packages of dubbing/feathers/pouch packaged material

  • Fly tying tools eg. scissors, bobbins, finishing whip, etc.

The final product, intended to be CNC’d from two pieces of hardwood, was designed to have a top and bottom section. The top section containing the tools for tying while the bottom section holds all the materials needed in one session tying.

The deliverables for the project were manufacturing drawings so that the client could take this to a CNC shop and have it constructed for the first time (just a little too large for my 3D printer).

The rendering below was the final stage at delivery; the far side, after being cutout, short dowels would be inserted into the holes so that spools of thread can be stacked and stored. To the right of the spool location are rectangular cutouts meant for standing pouch packages, full of feathers and dubbing, upright in those cutouts. In between the pouches would be small metal wire, connecting to the bottom piece and the side of the top wooden piece creating something similar to a bike rack.

The design is still in the works but check out Buffalo Fly Co. for more updates!
